Why do people think PJ Harvey is such a great artist?

I listened to the album Rid of Me, which was highly acclaimed by music critics, and it's simply awful! That shrieking scared my cat. She does have a couple of good albums (Stories from the city, is this desire) but the rest if just terrible noise!
