Dietary calcium is important for bone growth and maintenance because calcium is a significant constituent of bone, vital in hardening and mineralizing bone. Hydroxylapatite (Ca5(PO4)3(OH), usually written Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2), a phosphate of calcium, makes up seventy percent of bone. Resorption of calcium is also important in metabolic calcium balance. Calcium from bone can be mobilized, when necessary, for other physiological functions, especially muscular and neural functions.
