Should I avoid dating this man or even being platonic friends with?

I've met a guy at a bookstore who asked me out on a date. We had a really wonderful time to the point where we got super comfortable with each other. The problem is that towards the end of the date, he tells me that he is separated from his wife for the last two years, but just got out of the military alittle less than a year. He's planning on applying to the same university as his wife. They have no kids either and tells me that he can't afford a divorce with her because it would cost him $5,000, but they don't have any joint accounts or anything like that. He tells me that he wants to continue to date me, but I told him I would think about it. He tells me that he is planning on divorcing her within the next 2 years because he has alot of debt to pay and is still in school. Should I just try to be friends (non-ually) with him or avoid him altogether? Thanks.
