A simple question about English?

It is an idiom ... "many a" followed by singular noun means the same thing as "many" followed by a plural noun. We still use it in speech, in such phrases as "many a time". But mainly you see it in poetry. When we use it in speech, we use it to express feelings of nostalgia for those things ... like "many a girl I've known".
