How does America maintain its power.?

When I look at what pes for culture in the United States I am appalled. I am talking about B-list celebrities who get way to much ink, like the Hiltons and their ilk. If Americans are so lacking in intellect, how do we maintain our ascendency in the world. I have heard that it is because it is run by a handful of technocrats, who keep things goin.
